Get Active Community Worker

I have worked in the field of health and fitness for a number of years following graduating with a BSc in Sports Science. My work has involved developing and delivering such initiatives as GP exercise referral schemes, health walk programmes and publicity campaigns around physical activity. I’m the newest member of the Get Active Team commencing in post in June 2010. I have the lead on communications for the team.

Interesting Fact:
I was once a National gymnast competing in many competitions representing the North West of England.

Excuses for not being active:
‘I have no time’, ‘family commitments’ and sometimes ‘I just can’t be bothered’.

How do I do it?
I don’t see physical activity as a chore so I always manage to squeeze it in somehow.  My week usually includes family walks on a Sunday with some geo-caching thrown in, a weekly dance class (my ‘me time’ and a nice social with friends), and regular walks with my new dog as it’s the only way to tire her out!!  I recently got in to running after signing up for a 10k run for charity. Parkrun on a Saturday morning has been my perfect motivator as I get to run with around 100 other people, all mixed abilities and the atmosphere is great! I have also been known to try a spot of ‘adrenaline junkie’ type activities including climbing, canoeing, assault courses and skiing. Some of these are not for the faint hearted but I find it a great achievement to say ‘I conquered my fears’!!
